Rep. John Lawrence, chair of the House Select Committee on Restoring Law and Order, has released a statement following the committee's unanimous approval of its second interim report. The report criticizes Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner's handling of law enforcement in the city.

"This report paints a scathing picture of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s utter failure to uphold law and order in the city of Philadelphia," said Rep. Lawrence. He described the document as being based on extensive research, including first-hand accounts, statistics, data analysis, and statements from crime victims.

A study commissioned by the Philadelphia Police Department is cited in the report. It attributes an increase in shootings to "new prosecutorial policies and decision-makings under [DA Krasner]." The study claims that criminals believe they face minimal consequences for gun-related offenses. The report highlights that gun charges are withdrawn by Krasner's office at twice the state average rate.

According to former employees under DA Krasner, inadequate training for new assistant district attorneys has led to numerous case dismissals or withdrawals. Statistics from Krasner's office reveal that two-thirds of violent offense prosecutions this year have been withdrawn or dismissed.

The report also notes criticism from state and federal judges regarding DA Krasner's actions. "Criminals are not being prosecuted. Crime rates are up dramatically," Lawrence stated, noting that over 1,000 murders have occurred since early 2021 in Philadelphia.

In response to these allegations, Lawrence claims that instead of addressing these issues, DA Krasner hired lawyers to sue the committee and organized press events rather than focusing on prosecution efforts. According to Lawrence, despite calls for change, DA Krasner expressed pride in his office’s work.

The investigation will continue as part of ongoing efforts to address crime and violence in Philadelphia.
